Upstream is the last solo album Jimmi released before having a break from rock music, going to university and forming Innamech. It received glowing reviews and was generally considered at the time to be his most consistent album to that point. Upstream received plenty of airplay and was album of the week on both ABC Northern NSW and ABC Far North QLD.
Jimmi was joined in the studio by legendary Australian drummer, Hamish Stuart, and Bass player Alex Hewetson (of Directions in Groove fame). The album was recorded between Jimmi's own studio and Sound Heaven in the Blue Mountains. The Rhythm section tracks were all recorded live in the studio. Luke Dubber (Hermitude) returns on Keys. Jimmi wanted to create a unified vibe on the album and achieved this, in part by playing all the basic rhythm guitar parts on acoustic guitar, even for more rock oriented tracks. Electric guitar is used more for colour and grit.
The tracks on upstream were picked from about 30 songs that Jimmi recorded demos for. Jimmi did a survey of about 100 people to find out which songs people were responding best to. The songs on the album are a result of that process
